Welcome to Base Camp Lindsey

Our facility:

On January 21, 2020 Base Camp Lindsey purchased the old Cedar Falls Care Center from the City of Wichita Falls.  Abandoned in August 2007, the building sat empty for thirteen years.  The victim of vandals, squatters, and neglect our building was in rough shape!  Through the work of our tireless volunteers, the old building is coming to life again.  Once renovations are complete, it will be a welcoming home with a rustic flair for our homeless Veterans as they begin their journey to healing and independence.

Meet our friend Bill

We'd like to introduce you to our friend Bill.  We met Bill in 2018 as he came to our Stand Down events in the winter and summer.  Bill said he was following our progress and dreamed one day of being able to live at Base Camp Lindsey.  In summer 2022, we received a call from a hospital social worker that there was a homeless Veteran who had just had a stroke and she worried that she was releasing him back onto the street with no one to help him.  Our Street Outreach team sprang into action and met with Bill right there in his hospital room.  Our building wasn't ready, but we worked with him to identify resources, assist him in getting to appointments, helped him apply for housing assistance and checked on him daily.  During this time Bill actually lived on our front porch and acted as our security guard and overall handyman.  In late October we received the call that Bill's apartment was ready and we began gathering furniture and getting him moved into his new home.  Bill was proud of his new home and was starting a new job working from home.  Unfortunately, we lost Bill to another stroke in early December and he never got to see the doors of Base Camp Lindsey open.  We know that Bill left us knowing he had friends who loved him and he didn't die alone or on the street.  And that counts for something.  There will be a rose bush planted in his honor in front of Base Camp Lindsey in memory of our friend and as a reminder of how important our Mission is to those we seek to serve.
